Tell me more about being Lutheran…
The ELCA confesses the Triune God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In our preaching and teaching the ELCA trusts the Gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe.
ELCA teaching or theology serves the proclamation and ministry of this faith. It does not have an answer for all questions, not even all religious questions. Teaching or theology prepares members to be witnesses in speech and in action of God’s rich mercy in Jesus Christ.
This is Christ’s church.
There is a place for you here.
We are the church that shares a living, daring confidence in God’s grace.
What to expect at Hill Avenue Grace worship
Traditional Service
Our 10:00am virtual worship service via Zoom and Facebook Live is a modified traditional Lutheran service. The congregation is led through service with a virtual worship bulletin. It consists of the confession and forgiveness of sins, two scripture readings, The Gospel acclamation and Sermon plus several hymns. Virtual Holy Communion is celebrated every other week.
We also utilize joyful music during our services as “he who sings, prays twice”. –St. Augustine
Hill Avenue Grace Lutheran Chancel Choir is an ensemble of singers whose primary ministry is the leading of the musical portions of the liturgy. Hymns are accompanied by the organ or piano, which is the primary instrument of this service. Soloists, choirs, and instrumentalists are also incorporated to enhance the service. Currently, due to the pandemic, the choir is not performing at worship services, but the pastor and choir director sing the hymns.
Holy Communion
Currently, due to the pandemic, Hill Avenue Grace Lutheran is not meeting live in the sanctuary. Our current worship service is virtual each Sunday via Zoom and Facebook Live.
Hill Avenue Grace Lutheran celebrates Holy Communion every Sunday. All are welcome at the Lord’s table.
Ushers will excuse the congregation through the center aisle. Communion is taken through intinction. The pastor will hand you the bread ‘body of Christ’ and you will dip it into either wine or grape juice ‘the blood of Christ’. Parishioners are to return to their seats using the side aisle.
We are happy to accommodate persons needing gluten free eucharist and are also able to bring the bread and wine to those who are unable to kneel at the rail.
First Communion classes are on-going based on interest. Please contact Pastor Zachary Johnson or our church office for more information. Currently we may need to adjust instruction virtually during the pandemic.
Bible Study
We welcome you to continue your fellowship and learning with Adult Bible Study. Study opportunities vary throughout the year. Please check our church event calendar or feel free to contact the pastor or our church office. Currently due to the pandemic, the pastor posts a weekly study on the upcoming scripture texts to Facebook on Wednesday afternoons.
Bible School for Children
Let the little children come to me – Matthew 19:14
We welcome children from Kindergarten through fifth grade to bible study. During the school year (mid-September to mid-June) Sunday School is offered during the worship service. Children are dismissed after the first hymn and return to their families for communion.
